The private schools associated with S/PA offer students a strong academic and values-based education. These schools consider it their mission to educate disadvantaged students. Nurturing and supportive environments at our partner schools provide S/PA students with a better chance for personal and academic success.
Many of New Jersey’s inner-city public schools have major problems, both academically and socially. Some graduate as few as 50% of their students. By contrast, the non-public schools in the same neighborhoods are graduating well over 95% of their students. The vast majority of those students graduating from S/PA affiliated high schools go on to institutions of higher learning.
Although all of the schools in the program have a religious affiliation, they were not selected for religious reasons, but rather because they are the only private schools remaining in these inner-city neighborhoods.
The 7 schools that Student/Partner Alliance selected to be affiliated with possess the following characteristics:
- Located in Newark, Jersey City, Elizabeth, Bayonne and Montclair
- Community-oriented, structured, disciplined, committed, nurturing
- Strong academic institutions with high college acceptance rates
- Accessible counseling services which assist students in having a successful academic and personal experience in high school
- Effective guidance services which elicit hundreds of thousands of dollars toward college scholarships to graduates each year
The schools S/PA supports have limited financial resources, but use structure, discipline, accountability and encouragement to motivate their student bodies. S/PA schools have consistently high behavioral and academic standards for their students, and also provide the support and additional help needed to achieve those standards. All of the schools promote college readiness from freshman year and provide the guidance and counseling necessary for the students to reach their academic goals.
Unfortunately, many motivated inner-city youths do not have the financial means to attend a private school. In addition to helping the students directly through scholarship support, Student/Partner Alliance helps out partner schools by enrolling additional students. This bolsters the schools’ economic viability by helping to keep their classrooms full.
