Amid music and conversation, Student/Partner Alliance’s ‘family’ began their Thanksgiving celebration by gathering in the service of the hungry of NJ with students, partners, mentors and family members from Student/Partner working for two hours at the Community FoodBank of NJ in Hillside on Saturday, November 4th. The group filled the large warehouse room as well as a side room with the 92 students, 30 Partners/Mentors and 14 family members who participated!
Donning hairnets and surgical gloves, the group bagged pasta for distribution to organizations who will then provide the food items to huge numbers of hungry residents of NJ during the holiday season.
This annual volunteer event is anticipated by everyone involved with S/PA because it gives mentors a chance to spend time with their high school mentees while giving back to people in neighboring communities who might otherwise go hungry during the holiday season.
“I really feel as if we had a breakthrough this time – with my student’s mom there, we all got to know each other better – and had a great time working side-by- side while talking about all sorts of things,” said one of the mentors.
One parent emailed her son’s mentor after the FoodBank event saying, “I am a single mom struggling to give my son the best of everything… I want to thank you for your time and patience with my son – he is so blessed.”
